Oxygen administration via nasal cannula was established several decades ago. 1 The use of oxygen increased remarkably after publication of 2 landmark studies in the 1980s, which have shown that long-term oxygen administration in COPD patients with hypoxemia results in a near doubling of life expectancy. 2,3 For long-term oxygen therapy the usual prescribed flow is 2 L/min.
